The case for pathologist ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy.
O ne of the questions considered at the ‘‘National Cancer Institute (NCI) Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration State of the Science Conference’’ held October 22 through 23, 2007, is whether ultrasound guidance should be used during the fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy of a thyroid nodule. I would like to make the case that the answer to the question of ultrasound-guided FNA (USGFNA) is ‘‘absolutel...

RM The primary goal of fine-needle aspiration is to acquire individual cells as opposed to tissue, which is the aim of fine-needle biopsy. Cells may not necessarily provide the stroma, or the associated architecture, of the surrounding tissue. Thus, if the surrounding architecture is needed to make a diagnosis, a fine-needle biopsy, which typically uses a core biopsy needle, should provide that.

Dear Editor, I read with great interest the recent article published in the Annals of Academy of Medicine Singapore entitled, ‘Surgeon-Performed Ultrasound-Guided Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (SP-US-FNAC) Shortens Time for Diagnosis of Thyroid Nodules, Ann Acad Med Singapore 2014;43:320-4’. Indeed, ultrasound-guided fi ne-needle aspiration (US-FNA) is an exceptionally valuable and simple app...
متن کاملUltrasound Guided Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy of Abdominal Masses
Introduction Ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration biopsy of abdominal masses is an increasingly common diagnostic procedure in oncology. Various imaging modalities like lymphography, fluoroscopy and computerized tomography (CT) have been utilized in the evaluation of abdominal masses. The advantages of ultrasono-graphy is that it is rapid, inexpensive, versatile, no ionizing radiation is ap...
متن کاملUltrasound Guided Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy of Gastrointestinal Masses
The study was undertaken to evaluate the role of ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of gastrointestinal masses in providing higher diagnostic yield and assess its reliability in distinguishing between benign and malignant gastrointestinal lesions. 86 patients with gastrointestinal masses after thorough clinical examination underwent ultrasonographic examination. Those foun...
